Best Holiday Ever

I love the fourth of July for many reasons.   It’s when my husband and I started “dating”,  my birthday is right around the corner, summer time which means everyone is vacationing and happy, fireworks,  parties, and of course FREEDOM!

Fifteen years ago, when Steve and I were living the most carefree life at the beach, we started our annual fourth of July parties.  They were a blast.  Sixty or so people deep on the huge gravel driveway, different theme every year and friends from all over would come.

I’d wake up in the morning in our tiny 800 square foot apartment and 11 bodies would be strewn about passed out cold.  I’d walk outside to start cleaning and more bodies would be out there.  How drunk do you have to be to pass out on gravel?

The parties would go into the early morning as friends played the bongos and stories of high school and college would pop out and the laughter and happiness was as thick as the hot sticky air.

Eventually those parties, 9 running, turned into small bbq’s at our home and eventually those turned into just a few friends and their kids.  And now we make our way to other people’s homes.

Every day the girls dart outside to play with the flag.  They take turns being the flag holder while the other one says the Pledge of Allegiance or sings This Land is My Land.  They put their hand over their heart and stare patriotically at the flag.  I am beyond thrilled that their school teaches them this with such pride; it makes me want to keep the 17 mini flags out year round.

Speaking of flags, I love putting out a thousand flags and finding adorable holiday outfits for the girls.  I love honoring our country and the men and women who protect our country.  I love, if only for a day, celebrating how wonderful America is.  I love that family and friends come together all day and the worries are gone.

I am grateful to live in such an amazing country and blessed that I get to celebrate with such amazing people!  God Bless America, Let Freedom Ring,  This Land is Your Land This Land is My Land, Amazing Grace, Hallelujah,  I Pledge Allegiance.

Do you go Pickin’?

What a beautiful day to go strawberry picking; a month early!  The yields were plentiful and sweet.  I take the girls every year and they enjoy it so much.  It usually takes us an hour or so but this year they were on it and we filled 3 buckets in about 30 minutes. They eat as they pick so it’s a superb morning snack and then I don’t have to worry about feeding them.

Below are pictures over the years.

Above they are almost a year and a half.  I had to clean out their buckets since they threw whatever they found in it.  They also ate a ton of strawberries; the stem, flower and all!

Above we have H just eating everything we pick and below we have L slaving away picking and picking at almost two and a half.

And lastly we have today; almost three and a half (said with a tear).  It looks like they are contemplating the harvest.

Ahh and to end the morning a naked water bouncy bounce.  As I watered the plants I would walk by and water them.  They had a mad game of ring-around-the-roseys going on and instead of falling down they would fling each other.   I’m just waiting for one of them to fling through the netting.

It’s 2:00 and the house is quiet….for now.  Rest up buttercups because we have friends coming over at 4. You just gotta love spring!!

The Day After a Great Day

What a great St. Patrick’s Day, full of festivities, family and fun!  We headed to Ocean City for the mayhem.  The parade itself wasn’t very impressive even with 100 plus entries but the crowd was amazing.  Green everywhere, along with beer, goofy costumes, and brilliant spirit.  I believe this was the girls first ever parade and they really loved it.
We then went for some much needed pizza and more beer.  Before ending the night at my sister’s house for a sleep over, we stopped by K’s house to let the kids run around and swing on their tire in the back yard.  They needed it since they devoured a ton of candy from the floats.
This morning we had a big old Coates’s style breakfast; Kate vacuumed my car while the boys took the girls on a tractor and four-wheeler ride.

Really my only complaints are:
1)      Go easy on the beer; Harp hits a lot harder than Miller lite.
2)      Note to float leaders- throw more than 3 pieces of candy to a group of 30 kids…idiots

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful for a lot this week.  I’m generally a happy girl that feels grateful more often than not but this past weekend we celebrated my Dad’s 70th birthday and that started me thinking.  Let’s start that list.

  1. Spending a very cool birthday dinner with 19 of my favorite people in the world and they all happen to be related to me which leads me right into number 2
  2. Family.  Mine is so big and so close and I couldn’t imagine anything better
  3. Birthday 70 for my Dad.  I’m so glad my parents are alive and healthy and lucid enough (on most days j/k) to watch me develop as a Mom and watch my kids grow
  4. My nephew –to-be on May 15
  5. Warm weather
  6. An amazing support of women/Moms
  7. The strength to work on calming this temper
  8. Safe travels
  9. Healthy kids
  10. Steve

I’m being a little mushy today; it happens.  The week has just been good and I am happy.  I love looking at all the pictures I took this past weekend with my family.  I love watching my girls play with their cousins and take care of them; you know because they are the oldest at 3!  It’s a good life even on the worst days of chaos, tears, yelling, time-outs, teasing, accidents, messes, whining, tattling, punching, hair pulling, wetting, fussing, worrying, convincing, bribing…did I leave anything out?

Do your Eyes Burn???

Ugh!  Mine do!  I’m exhausted!  It was just one of those mornings where I woke up cranky because I just wanted to sleep a little bit longer….it was already 8:30! Time to get up!  So I got up and shook off the bad tude.  I was super excited because today was the big to-do at the library to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s 100th birthday!  ONE HUNDRED, 100!

We had an easy morning getting ready and since it was a birthday H just knew she would be getting a cupcake so I told them we would go for a treat after.  The celebration sucked.  It was a news anchor, the sheriff, and a librarian that each read a Dr. Seuss book; do you realize how long those books are?!  I guess I never paid attention since I was the one reading to my snuggle bugs.

Before the reading began the Jaycee’s mascot bear was walking around which scared the crap out of my girls and they literally were crying and clutching me for dear life.  A few friends were laughing, once they saw the bear coming, they just knew how the girls would react.  It is sad but funny to watch both of them climbing all over me as if they want to get inside of me.  Of course I break out in a sweat and the bad mood starts showing its ugly face again.

Thank God it was over quickly.  We picked up a free book and checked out our others and left.

they love self check out

We made a quick pit stop to get bubble bath and while on our way I get a text.  You know one of those innocent texts but for some reason they annoy the hell out of you? So as this is coming in the girls start getting a little wild.  I would have thought they burned up all their energy with their fear in the library.

We get in and out of the store with a few annoyances because all the Easter stuff is out and they wanted every cute stuffed animal they saw.

Now this stupid Robby doll I’ve mentioned before has to come with us everywhere but since I won’t let the girls attempt to drag it outside of the car I have to buckle the stupid thing in the car seat so no one steals it or she doesn’t get lost.  IT’S A DOLL, IT ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE!

OK we are back in the car and heading to the cutest deli (The Acorn Market) every!  We pull in and:

  • I open the car door, girls run out into the street!  They have never done this before.  I scream they come back.
  • We make it to the porch where they are free to run around and H slips on the mossy wet (it’s been raining for days) ramp after telling her not to run 10 times
  • H bounces her rubber ball so hard and of course it flings into the one opening that leads under the deck
  • H starts crying
  • My sister and niece arrive, whew
  • Get sandwiches, eat, they mostly whine about getting their treat

That's a BIG sandwich

  • Fine eat your damn cookie
  • H throws her mini quarter sized doll, gone.
  • Cousin goes and finds it
  • Talking to sister H drops to the grassy lawn, which is still wet, I tell her to get up so L rolls around instead
  • They run into each other fall down
  • They then run through the mulch, that they were told to stay off of
  • At this point I am so flippin’ annoyed and Katy, and her daughter are laughing so L gives me a roll the eyes look
  • H flicks the mulch with her foot
  • We get home, they go inside and I unpack the car
  • Are you kidding me?  There is no big bad wolf so why are all your toys and you  hiding under the covers!
  • Play room is now destroyed

The girls and most toys are under that blanket

UGH!  We are now home, they are napping and I am still annoyed wondering how to summons a 6 pack of Sam Adams to my front porch….

Eleven Things that Pick ME Up…

This list keeps getting interrupted and I don’t know why.  I’m trying to keep it short and sweet so I will focus on the 11 things that picked me up in the last week!

1)      Turning up some good tunes

2)      Looking at pictures of my kids (even if they are in front of me- a still shot of a great memory, a cozy snuggler is so powerful)

3)      A classic moment of goofing off from the girls at the worst possible time

4)      A  Vanilla or Pumpkin latte from Starbucks

5)      Art projects with the girls

6)      A gift by mail (either from someone else or myself)

7)      A lunch date with Brooke

8)      My monthly magazines, I love when they overlap and I get all 3 on one day

9)      A mad wrestling match between the dogs

10)    A funny phone call from Holly

11)    A good roaring fire

This is like my “Seven Smells I Love” post, there are many more but this is the list today.  What are your favorite pick me ups?

Thanksgiving Thursday

A great blogger, Amanda Nethero, posts every Thursday about all the wonderful things she is thankful for in that given week.  This is a brilliant way to slow down and find those things that happen in a single week to be grateful for.  Seems hard sometimes when there is the stress of bills, kids, holidays, families, sicknesses and so much more but once you take a second a sea of smiles come forth.  This is my first post on this topic but certainly won’t be my last. In no order (except the first one) are the things I am thankful for over the past week.

  1. my sweet girls who just turned 3
  2. ending the year with my family as we celebrate the twins 3rd birthday
  3. waking up in a beautiful home on Christmas morning with MY family
  4. the sweet face on our pit bull who has no idea she ever had the crap beat out of her
  5. a husband that works so hard to ensure that his family is happy and safe
  6. sisters and brothers who love me and my family
  7. a delicious blanket made with my sisters two hands
  8. a thoughtful “back-up” necklace from my sister because she knows, like the last two, that I will break this one also
  9. a conversation with my husbands grandmother on her 90th birthday
  10. a kick ass seafood Christmas dinner prepared by my husband
  11. parents who are super loving and involved
  12. a blog that some people love
  13. my health
  14. a fun ride on the train watching all the kids faces light up at the lights
  15. great pre-school teachers
  16. Stephanie and her friendship
  17. Tammy and her love
  18. Spending time with my nieces and nephews who are all so cute and healthy
  19. solid neighbors who care but don’t get too much in my business
  20. definitely not last my husband

I could go on and on.  It really is easy and makes you smile when you think about all the love you truly have.

Thanks Amanda!!
