Play Pretend for Real
I’ve been reminded of a favorite childhood memory tonight; play pretend for real. When we were younger my sister and I would play pretend but we, and when I say we I really mean my sister, would take it to that next step where she was playing for real. For example I would say something like:
“OK Holly let’s go home, Mom’s calling us.”
“OK Margie.”
“No Holly, I’m not Margie right now, I’m Kerry.”
“Ok Margie.”
And on it went. We were 6 and 8 or somewhere around that age.
It is starting all over again. L calls H Mommy and I am constantly answering her to which I get a sharp eye as if I should know better. Tonight was particularly annoying because I kept trying to talk to L and she would say things like:
“Mommy do it.”
“I am doing it!”
“NO MOMMY do it, you not Mommy.”
What the hell is going on with this child and her ability to play?
I told her to get her jammies on and she stayed in character the entire time addressing H as mommy and me like some peon that had no business being anywhere near them. I finally had to tell her to stop. Did she? NO! She kept in character. I had to tell her play pretend was over and to knock it off until everything was done for the evening.
Wow kids are fascinating. She should definitely seek out some drama classes; she will go far if she does.
HA-HA! Those are photos of my sister and me which crack me up because those remind me so much of the memories my daughters are making. The top is me probably getting ready for a squeeze attack on Holly and below was our debut performance of singing in the rain. We were so clever! We used our feeties as tux jackets and umbrellas as canes. We even got quieter as we walked up the stairs as if we were fading out! CLASSIC!
Keep up the wonderful imagination girls even if it drives me crazy sometimes!
Noote- sorry for the horrible scanning job; time to update scanner in other words time to update me.
OMG SO FUNNY!!! I am relentless with my pretend time! And that picture of us singing and dancing with our feetie pajamas….that carpet in the foyer, do you remember when we would play airplane that that carpet was the pool and we would have to always walk around it? I remember it being HUGE. Ahh good memories.
OMG I totally forgot about that being the pool!!!! SO FUNNY!! Ugh you are so annoying with that elephant memory! I’m writing it all down so i can always remember even when you aren’t around! haha and the stairs were the airplane seats and you sat by the wall or the railing and we always wanted a railing seat so we could see the pool! We are awesome!
Glad you’re annoyed. Payback…
OH Bob! How dare you be happy for my pain. Bad Pop bad!
