A peek at my crazy life as a Mother of fraternal girls AND identical girls!!!
Category Archives: Dairy Free Life*
My little L has no room for dairy in her life so we’ve had a rough patch of finding a new normal for her but I think we have it down! I’d like to eventually have this be a rotating page but I am not too brilliant with the technicalities of blog design so until I can get around to that this will be just one big post.
First and foremost is butter! People don’t realize butter comes from a cow nor do they think of butter as dairy. Dairy is anything that comes from a cow, goat or sheep. With that EVERYTHING has butter in it or is cooked in it. After many taste testing of non-dairy butter my gal settled on Earth Balance.
I keep one at my parents house, sisters house, and a travel one outside so wherever we go it comes with us. It tastes great and it’s healthier so that takes care of that.
It turns out that she can tolerate goat products and sheep but NO COW.
When we initially had to make the switch to a lactose free live it was tough but doable. Through our research and talking to many people; doctors included, we learned that yogurt was tolerable because during its process most of the lactose is stripped from it. We found lactose free milk, cheeses (mozzarella for example doesn’t contain lactose), and ice cream.
But once her little body said no way to all dairy the challenge thickened. Giving up her morning milk was the toughest but is now just a faint memory. Going out is difficult esp if the server is insincere in his attempt to truly help us so sometimes we end up leaving or giving her a plate of fruit for $100.
Luckily she has a very mature palate and is up for trying new things. Her favorites these days are:
spinach drizzled with honey and sliced strawberries
bread with peanut butter and bananas
hummus and pretzels
most veggies dipped in honey
bagels with goat cheese
pasta with “her” butter
home-made pumpkin bread or banana bread
She still misses her yogurt although she asks for it less and less. The house is pretty much dairy free aside of H’s yogurt and the occasional splurge for H and S to have cream cheese or if cheese is dire to a dish we are making but other than that we try to cater to her needs.
We did go on a shopping spree to find her a yogurt she loves. We bought 10 different types of yogurts-brands and flavors, and she settled, quite fondly on Amande.
She is not a big fan of coconut (she’s crazy I know) but she doesn’t mind almond. the same goes for milk. She doesn’t particularly care for a glass of it alone but on cereal she is down with almond or soy especially if it’s vanilla.
I hate seeing her face these challenges but I love a home that is using fewer and fewer animal products.
Just recently found dairy free chocolate chips and they are ridiculously delicious!
* PLEASE NOTE THESE IS A COW DAIRY FREE LIFE- she is fine with goat and sheep products.
We go through so much hummus that I decided to perfect a homemade recipe to save a few bucks. Hummus is a staple, not only because the kids adore it but it’s packed with power nutrients and it is both … Continue reading →
Growing up, I had only one friend in my entire class that had food allergies. She was deathly allergic to peanuts. This was not common and wasn’t treated with the delicateness that we show our children these days. Unfortunately, because … Continue reading →

Gluten free chicken nuggets are expensive especially when your feeding four. I guess I could make two batches and make sure three of the girls eat the regular ones while L eats the gluten free but eh. My wallet prefers … Continue reading →

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner for my gal but we love it. It was Steve’s idea I have to admit. He melts a bowl of goat cheese just enough so it’s spreadable but I just … Continue reading →
Like all parents, I am always searching for (relatively) healthy, QUICK, breakfast options for the kids. I find a recipe for pancake muffins and altered to fit our needs. (The original called for syrup…not in this house.) It was SUPER … Continue reading →
