Fruit Shake 101

About twenty-five years ago my brother came dashing into the house and grabbed a banana, milk and ice and dumped it into the blender.

Five seconds later he was downing a delicious, frothy, healthy smoothy.

I was amazed and hooked. It took me a few times to get it right and my experiments didn’t always yield a smile worthy drink.

I learned quickly to be careful with pulpy fruits. For example don’t use grapefruits and oranges. Whew-wee, you will be pulling out strands of pulp for days.

I learned quickly to be JUST as careful with seedy fruit. Don’t use too many strawberries, raspberries and blackberries or you will be picking seeds out of the deepest parts of your teeth.

I have a staple go-to with ingredients that are always in my inventory. I still love to experiment but the kids love this one so why not stick with what works.

  • 1 1/2 Cups Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1 1/2 Cups Orange Juice (this is the one item I never have but for this recipe since it’s in the photos I’m adding it. Otherwise I just use 3 cups of the almond milk)
  • 1/3 Cup hemp seed
  • 4 Cups frozen fruit; its a mix- either strawberry, blueberry, raspberry mix or the other popular one is strawberry, pineapple and mango
  • 3 Bananas
  • 1 Cup water

It blends smooth and sweet.

I’ve learned that spinach, peas and black beans are such an easy, mild flavor to hide. I don’t use this anymore since my girls are all pretty good about having a diverse plate of food.

Avocados are delicious but now that the babies are allergic we’ve nixed them.

Bananas are a very powerful flavor so if you don’t like them use less. Keep in mind the less ripe they are the less flavorful they are and the frothier the shake becomes.

Invest in a GREAT blender. My mother gave me her blender from when she got married and I blended that sucker to the ground. Steve repaired it until it could no longer be repaired.

We went through about four blenders before we finally bought the Ninja. Invest if you blend; its worth it’s weight in gold.

Recently my buddy suggested cooked sweet potatoes and I can’t wait to try that. It’s making my mouth water just thinking about it!

Hope you enjoy and hope you shake!

I need to start adding a little more to fill the blender all the way. Currently the cups get filled as such but the babies are drinking full mugs of it these days.

When Steve’s home I have to make two pitchers but it’s worth it knowing they are all getting such a high dose of nutrients.

Right little thief?
